NHL 2009 Draft Results

1st overall in the NHL Draft
NY Islanders John Tavares - C - London

Analysis: "Now you can have the offence to match up with teams like Washington and Pittsburgh. This is the right guy at the right time for a team that needs an identity." - Pierre McGuire

2nd overall in the NHL Draft
Tampa Bay Victor Hedman - D - Modo

Analysis: "He's a very mature guy on and off the ice. This is a guy who played 21 minutes a game on average against men in the Swedish Elite League." - Bob McKenzie

3 Colorado Matt Duchene - C - Brampton

Analysis: "This kid's got character, heart and soul. He can score and check, but the biggest thing is that he's a Bryan Trottier type player - he plays all ends of the ice and uses all 200 feet." - Pierre McGuire

4 Atlanta Evander Kane - C - Vancouver

Analysis: "He's physical on the forecheck, has a lot of edge and can score. He's a strong guy and a tough guy - he just needs to add bulk to his frame. He’s only going to get bigger and stronger." - Bob McKenzie

5 Los Angeles Brayden Schenn - C - Brandon

Analysis: "This guy is heart and soul and winning character. He'll be a perfect addition up front alongside Dustin Brown." - Pierre McGuire

6 Phoenix Oliver Ekman-Larsson - D - Leksand

Analysis: "He's the best two-way defenceman of the bunch of them. He's got big time upside and is a shooting star in the draft. Scouts call him a poor man's Nicklas Lidstrom." - Bob McKenzie

7 Toronto Nazem Kadri - C - London

Analysis: "He's got a chance to be a very good offensive player. This is a terrific kid who has tremendous offensive ability. He just needs a little consistency." - Bob McKenzie

8 Dallas Scott Glennie - RW - Brandon

Analysis: "He's a finesse player, perhaps a better playmaker than goal scorer. He's very quick and very skilled and just needs to mature a little bit before going into the NHL." - Bob McKenzie

9 Ottawa Jared Cowen - D - Spokane

Analysis: "He's a Memorial cup winner, has overcome his knee injury, but most importantly he has big body presence. Ottawa won't be easy to forecheck against Cowen and Erik Karlsson." - Pierre McGuire

10 Edmonton Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson - LW - Timra

Analysis: "The Edmonton Oilers love speed and Svensson is the fastest skater in this draft. This was the youngest Swede to ever play in the World Juniors. He drives to the net very well and has speed to burn." - Bob McKenzie

11 Nashville Ryan Ellis - D - Windsor

Analysis: "They just keep picking good defenceman. Ellis is a steal - this Nashville team blows us away with quality blueliners like Suter, Hamhuis, Klein and Weber." - Pierre McGuire

12 NY Islanders (from MIN) Calvin De Haan - D - Oshawa

Analysis: "He just needs to get stronger and learn to win one-on-one battles down low. He'll be a good defenceman and made a big jump up the chart, but he's got a long way to go." - Pierre McGuire

13 Buffalo Zack Kassian - RW - Peterborough

Analysis: "You want to talk nasty? You want to talk Milan Lucic? That's Zach Kassian. He's been drafted by a team with lots of undersized players. He was an organizational need for the Sabres." - Pierre McGuire

14 Florida Dmitry Kulikov - D - Drummondville

Analysis: "He has poise with the puck and is not afraid to get physical. He's not shy, will lay the hammer on you and can step up offensively." - Pierre McGuire

15 Anaheim Peter Holland - C - Guelph

Analysis: "Holland is a big guy whose point totals weren't too far off from Matt Duchene. He has all the tools, but scouts are wondering if his tenacity can match the skills." - Bob McKenzie

16 Minnesota (from NYI - CLB) Nick Leddy - D - Eden Prairie

Analysis: "A really good skater and a mobile, puck-moving defenceman. People want to see how the high schooler does at the next level and it begins with the USA Hockey program next month." - Bob McKenzie

17 St. Louis David Rundblad - D - Skelleftea

Analysis: "This is a really, really good defenceman. Swedish players are all about skill development now and you're seeing the payoff." - Pierre McGuire

18 Montreal Louis Leblanc - C - Omaha

Analysis: "He better be good! They're counting on this guy to be a No. 1 centre and help carry this club for a long time." - Pierre McGuire

19 NY Rangers Chris Kreider - C - Andover

Analysis: "He has dynamite speed. A lot of scouts say he might be the best prospect out of New England since Brian Leetch and that's pretty big praise." - Pierre McGuire

20 New Jersey (from CGY) Jacob Josefson - C - Djurgarden

Analysis: "Josefson should help with a transition towards a younger foundation up front for the Devils. He’s been compared to Henrik Zetterberg. I don’t know if he’s that good, but he’s that type of a player." - Pierre McGuire

21 Columbus (from ANA - PHI) John Moore - D - Chicago

Analysis: "He's an offensive defenceman whit lots of speed and has been compared to Mike Green. He's 50-50 to join Colorado College or go to the OHL next season." - Bob McKenzie

22 Vancouver Jordan Schroeder - C - Minnesota

Analysis: "With the Sedins in flux and Pavol Demtira not getting younger, the Canucks needed this pick - along with last year's pick Cody Hodgson - to inject some youth." - Pierre McGuire

23 Calgary (from NJ) Tim Erixon - D - Skelleftea

Analysis: "He's not fancy or slick - he's just good. He moves the puck unbelievably well and will grow into that 6-2 frame. When the games got big for Sweden at the World Juniors, he elevated his game." - Pierre McGuire

24 Washington Marcus Johansson - C - Farjestad

Analysis: "This guy plays in a great system in Farjestad in Sweden. He battled illness and a couple of concussions, but remains a solid prospect." - Pierre McGuire

25 Boston Jordan Caron - RW - Rimouski

Analysis: "Big body, gets to the net, battles hard along the wall and contributes offensively - this is a guy who is going to play in Boston with a lot of smashmouth." - Pierre McGuire

26 Anaheim (from CLB - NYI) Kyle Palmieri - RW/C - USA-18

Analysis: "He's not overly tall, but he's athletic with lots of speed. There have been questions about his character, but that shouldn't be an issue." - Pierre McGuire

27 Carolina Philippe Paradis - C - Shawinigan

Analysis: "This guy can shoot a puck through a wall. With Paradis, Carolina's got some good young forwards to provide insulation for Eric Staal." - Pierre McGuire

28 Chicago Dylan Olsen - D - Camrose

Analysis: "He's physical, plays hard and plays with an edge. He's off to Minnesota-Duluth, but there's a chance he can stay out West in the WHL." - Pierre McGuire

29 Tampa Bay (from DET) Carter Ashton - RW - Lethbridge

Analysis: "He's got NHL family ties and NHL skating, but the scouts want to see him be more physical on a consistent basis. He goes to the net hard and teams want to see him use his size more." - Bob McKenzie

30 Pittsburgh Simon Despres - D - Saint John
